Ask visitors for their email in chat

The AI agent can ask a visitor for their email address inside the chat. It shows an email card under its answer. When the visitor saves an address, it is stored on their contact and used for that conversation, so you can follow up if they leave.

#What the visitor sees

The agent decides when to ask. For example, a visitor might ask for a person: "Can someone from your team get back to me?" The agent then replies and points to the card, with words like "Leave your email on the card below".

The email card appears directly under the answer that asked for it. It shows:

  • The reason the agent gave for asking, such as "So someone from the Ridgeline team can get back to you."
  • An Email field.
  • A Save email button.

After the visitor clicks Save email, the card changes to a confirmation: "Thanks, we'll use their address for this conversation."

#What happens on your side

  • The address is saved as the email on the visitor's contact.
  • The conversation is left open for your team if nobody has answered it yet. In the example above its status is unresolved.
  • The conversation records that the agent asked, including the reason it gave.

#If you already have the visitor's email

The agent does not ask twice. If the contact already has an email on file, no second card appears. The agent says it will reach the visitor at the email it already has for them.

#If the visitor comes back

The card stays with the conversation. When a visitor reloads the page, opens the widget, goes to the Messages tab and reopens the conversation, the card is back under the answer that asked. It shows the saved state with their address.

Note

This is separate from the pre-chat form. The pre-chat form can be set to never show (widget.preChat.when set to never). When it is off, the message box is there from the start and the agent is the only thing that asks for an email.
